There’s something about the arrival of asparagus that makes it feel like spring has officially arrived. Those slender green spears, standing tall in their bundles, carry the quiet promise of freshness, lightness, and new beginnings. They're packed full of health benefits too!
Asparagus is one of the very first seasonal vegetables to appear after winter – and your body couldn’t be happier about it. Nature has a beautiful way of providing what we need, just when we need it, and asparagus is a perfect example.
So why is this springtime green such a gift to your health?
Asparagus is naturally rich in prebiotic fibre – especially one called inulin, which feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut. A well-nourished gut supports your immune system, mood, energy levels, and digestion – all of which can feel a little wobbly after winter.
This gorgeous green veg contains glutathione – a powerful antioxidant that helps your body neutralise toxins and protect cells. It's a natural way to support detoxification pathways without extreme diets or juice cleanses. Just one more reason to eat with the seasons.
Asparagus is a lovely source of folate, vitamin C, and B vitamins – nutrients that support your nervous system, especially during times of stress or hormonal shifts. If you’re feeling a bit out of sorts as the seasons change, this quiet little vegetable might help bring things back into balance.
Water-rich and low in starch, asparagus offers a beautiful contrast to the heavier foods of winter. It helps you lean into that natural desire for freshness – without feeling like a sudden dietary overhaul.
Asparagus isn't around for long. It’s best enjoyed simply – roasted, steamed, or griddled – and it pairs beautifully with lemon, garlic, olive oil, or tahini. If you’ve only ever had it boiled until floppy (we’ve all been there), now is the time to try something new.
Fresh, locally grown asparagus truly is one of the joys of Spring 💚
Let asparagus, with all of its health benefits, be your reminder to eat with the seasons, listen to your body, and welcome the fresh start that spring offers.
